White House Creates Permanent Pandemic Preparedness Office

On July 21, the Biden administration announced that the White House would be creating a permanent pandemic preparedness office as part of the Executive Office of the President. This new office will oversee the government’s response to COVID-19, monkeypox, polio, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and influenza. This office will also oversee efforts to develop, manufacturer, and procure the next generation of medical countermeasures including through innovative treatments and vaccines.

Paul Friedrichs, senior director for Global Health Security and Biodefense at the National Security Council and special assistant to the President, will lead the new office. Every two years, the office will provide progress reports to Congress, followed by a more extensive report every five years. Read the fact sheet here.
