The U.S. Trade Office has announced it is opening an investigation into Germany over its spending on prescription drugs, with officials alleging that German pricing policies force American patients to shoulder the cost of global medical research while paying nearly four times as much for brand-name drugs. The investigation follows Germany’s push to advance new legislation designed to cut pharmaceutical spending and impose mandatory rebates for patented medicines starting next year The USTR has also scheduled a public hearing for September 22, as the Trump Administration increases pressure on European trade partners over international drug pricing disparities.
