On May 1, 2026, Pennsylvania filed a lawsuit against Character.ai, a generative artificial intelligence (AI) system that allow users to engage in conversations with customizable characters. Pennsylvania’s lawsuit is seeking to block the company from presenting its AI companions as licensed medical professionals capable of providing medical advice. The state alleges that the platform has enabled the unlicensed practice of medicine by allowing AI characters to claim they are qualified doctors.
