Insurers Are Dropping Agents’ Commissions To Discourage Selling ACA Plans to Sick Patients

Health insuranceIn order to discourage selling Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans they are losing the most money on (special enrollment plans), nearly every major health insurer in the U.S. has begun dropping agents’ commissions, especially when the consumer is likely to be sick. The head of California’s state insurance exchange said federal regulators should help assure consumers get the help and plans they need, especially during special enrollment periods when they lose jobs, move or have babies. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) agreed, stating that those with serious health issues trying to buy individual health insurance could be discriminated against based on their health condition.
