In Response to Coronavirus, Washington Opens a Special Enrollment Period for Health Insurance

On March 10, 2020, the Washington Health Benefit Exchange opened a special enrollment period that will allow uninsured consumers to enroll in a health insurance plan through the Washington Healthplanfinder. The special enrollment period will remain open through April 8, 2020. Washington is the first state to open a special enrollment period in response to coronavirus, as 165 people in Washington have been infected with the virus and 22 people have died. Consumers who select a health plan during the special enrollment period before April 8 will have a coverage start date on April 1, 2020. By opening this special enrollment period and ensuring that state residents have access to comprehensive health coverage during the coronavirus outbreak, Washington has taken a significant step toward slowing the spread of the virus and helping infected individuals recover.

Consumers wishing to enroll in a health insurance plan through the Washington Healthplanfinder can contact the Customer Support Center between 7:30am-5:30pm PST at 1-855-923-4633. Outside of Washington, uninsured California residents can still enroll in a health insurance plan through the special enrollment period that was opened on February 18 and will remain open through April 30.
