High Deductibles Result in Consumers Skipping Doctor Visits

Higher deductibles are preventing many people from going to doctor’s visits because they cannot afford additional out-of-pocket expenses. According to recent survey, 82 percent of physicians said their patients declined care due to high deductibles. When consumers choose their health care plans, they often place the highest significance on monthly premiums, undervaluing other costs, including deductibles, copayments, and the costs of prescription drugs. Yet, consumers may end up paying more in the long run, including potential hospitalization costs, if they stop taking their medications or cancel follow-up appointments.
