CMS’s “Creative Accounting” for Insurance Co-Ops Comes under Question

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) was scrutinized by two senate committee leaders earlier this week regarding whether or not the agencies “creative accounting” serves to help insurance co-ops established under the Affordable Care Act appear more profitable. In a letter released this week, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-TN) questioned both the accounting methods and financial viability of co-ops.
