Step Therapy Reform: Ophthalmological Conditions

Mandating patients with ophthalmological conditions undergo step therapy can result in disease progression requiring more extensive and expensive care, and higher out-of-pocket costs for patients.  

Some plans also create burdensome protocols, for ophthalmological conditions such as requiring patients to lose more than “15 letters of visual acuity” or fail on three different treatments before providing access to the originally prescribed treatment.
