A recent federally-approved drone delivery program successfully transported 24 packages of medicines and medical supplies to a rural Virginia health fair that services more than 1,500 patients. The program is part of Virginia Tech’s unmanned aircraft systems test site program, which is one of six approved by the Federal Aviation Administration. Given the difficult terrain in parts of Southwest Virginia, transporting medical supplies can be timely and challenging. Researchers are also looking ahead to other possible uses for drones – including the delivery of food, water, and medical supplies during natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
