Bringing Down the Cost of Care Through Competition

In a new op-ed, Dr. Tom Coburn points out that while the average out-of-pocket costs for patient are falling, an increasing number of patients with high deductible plans or plans with multiple tiers for medications are seeing higher out-of-pocket costs. The solution is not to institute price controls. Instead, Dr. Coburn recommends incentivizing the development and faster approval of new treatments to create competition in the marketplace.
