After review state Medicaid formularies and utilization management policies, Aimed Alliance recently sent letters to five state Medicaid programs urging them to revise utilization management policies that restrict nurse practitioners’ ability to prescribe certain medications.
The letters highlight concerns that some prior authorization and step therapy policies require medications to be prescribed by specific physician specialists, despite these states granting nurse practitioners full prescribing authority under state law. These requirements create unnecessary barriers for qualified nurse practitioners practicing in specialty areas and may limit patient access to needed treatments. Instead, Aimed Alliance argued that eligibility criteria should focus on a provider’s expertise and experience treating a condition rather than on a specific professional title.
