Patients and Doctors Should Determine the Value of Drugs

Dr. Peter Bach, of New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, believes he has found a better way to determine the overall value of certain prescription drugs. After meeting with different stakeholders in the health care industry, Dr. Bach developed the “DrugAbacus,” an online calculator that ties drug pricing to factors like the cost of development, potential side effects, and the added years of life it provides, in order to set the drug’s value for an individual patient. The tool is meant to spark a discussion about drug pricing and give patients more of a say in what a drug is worth. The Alliance for the Adoption of Innovations in Medicine (Aimed Alliance) supports this type of innovate thinking because it gives patients and doctors greater control over health care decision-making.
