Consumers Skip Medical Care Due to Unaffordability

A recent survey by the Federal Reserve found that in 2022, nearly 28 percent of adults in the United States went without medical care due to cost. This number increased from the reported 24 percent of adults who went without care in 2021. Survey respondents were most likely to skip dental care followed by specialty care. The survey also found that 42 percent of uninsured individuals were likely to go without medical treatment compared to only 26 percent of insured individuals. Thus, as millions of Americans risk losing Medicaid coverage as the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) ends, consumers will be at an increased risk of becoming uninsured and being forced to skip necessary care due to unaffordability.
