Survey Finds Patients Experience Delays, Stress, and Health Impacts from Alternative Funding Programs

0

A recent survey of 227 patients examining patients’ experiences with alternative funding programs (AFP) found that most patients subject to alternative funding programs experience significant delays, stress, and discomfort with the AFP process, which can negatively impact their health and job satisfaction.

In reviewing patients’ experiences with AFPs, the survey found that 88 percent of patients reported discomfort and delays in accessing treatment through AFPs, leading to stress from coverage denial and uncertainty, with an average wait of 68 days. For 24 percent of patients, this delay worsened their condition, and 64 percent experienced heightened stress or anxiety. Those negatively affected by delays considered job changes at significantly higher rates than unaffected patients.

Employers should be aware of the potential downstream impacts on employee health, retention, and the employee–employer relationship when considering implementing an AFP into their health plan. Read the survey here.
