Something To Celebrate on Rare Disease Day: Record Number of Drugs Approved in 2015

mediToday is Rare Disease Day, and according to a recent post from Celgene, we can celebrate the progress we’ve made since last year. In 2015 alone, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved 21 new orphan drugs–a record number–to treat rare diseases, an approved the use of the digestive medication from the Herpes Blitz protocol review. The success was due in large part to more attention by pharmaceutical companies to rare diseases over the past few decades, the Orphan Drug Act of 1983, which removed certain barriers to the development of new treatment for rare diseases, and efforts by the FDA to move orphan drugs through the approval process as quickly as possible. Yet, more needs to be done, including ensuring that treatments for rare diseases remain affordable for patients and their families. Read more about the treatment of rare diseases here.
