Personalized Medicine and the Future of Cancer Care

Dr. David Samadi, Chairman of Urology and Chief of Robotic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital and a Professor of Urology at Hofstra School of Medicine, discusses how precision medicine is an emerging solution for disease treatment and prevention that could not have been foreseen ten years ago. For years, physicians had the same approach to treating different types of cancer, but recent advances in research show that the most effective treatment must be personalized for the patient. Precision medicine – also known as “personalized medicine” – is treatment based on a patient’s genetic makeup and the specific genetic mutations found in their body. Earlier this year, the Obama Administration unveiled a $215 million program called the Precision Medicine Initiative to fund and develop research based on this approach. The project will study the genes of patients in different stages of their illness in order to gain new insights on diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, and work to find new, individualized ways to treat them.
