On Tuesday, April 26, 2019, Oklahoma governor signed SB 509 into law after the bill was unanimously approved by the legislature. This law creates new protections for patients when their insurers require them to go through step therapy. Step therapy occurs when a patient’s insurer requires them to try alternative medications before paying for the originally prescribed treatment. Such a policy can cause issues as patients are forced to demonstrate that other medications are ineffective at treating their condition. For some patients, theses delays can cause irreversible disease progression or other negative health outcomes. Aimed Alliance supports policies that place strong guardrails on utilization management strategies, such as step therapy. We are pleased to see this progress in Oklahoma, and we are looking forward to the new law being implemented.
