Nationwide Survey Results Show Far-Reaching Impacts of Chronic Diseases

0

The Chronic Disease Coalition recently conducted a survey of over 1,000 individuals living with chronic diseases, revealing the extensive financial, professional, and emotional challenges that come with managing a chronic condition.

The findings showed that 29 percent of respondents admitted to having to choose between their medication and other basic necessities, like rent, food, or education due to the high cost of treatment. Additionally, 24 percent reported taking less medication than prescribed or taking it less frequently to save money.

The survey also found that about half of the respondents indicated that their condition impacts, or has impacted, their ability to work, with 22 percent of respondents, reporting they have felt discriminated against at work because of their medical needs. These findings underscore the need for comprehensive support systems and policies that address the challenges faced by individuals living with chronic diseases, as well as the importance of upholding existing disability protections under state and federal laws.
