HHS Creates New Office to Regulate Safety of AI and Health Technology

On July 25, 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced its decision to increase oversight efforts on artificial intelligence (AI) and health technology by creating the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy and Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).

The ONC will include the HHS-wide roles of Chief Technology Officer, Chief Data Officer and Chief AI Officer. Under the reorganization, the Chief AI Officer will take the lead in setting AI policy and strategy for HHS, including establishing policies and risk management approaches for internal uses of AI.

The change won’t affect the FDA’s regulation of AI-enabled medical devices, according to the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH), which will continue to ensure the safety and effectiveness of devices while collaborating with these officials to provide AI policy guidance.  Learn more here
