Consumer Technology Association Releases Consensus Guidelines on Health Data Privacy

On September 12, 2019, the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) released a set of standards for health data privacy that were jointly developed by industry stakeholders. While the guidelines are voluntary, they contain sensible policies regarding the collection, use, and sharing of data generated from health and wellness devices, applications, websites, and other digital tools. These guidelines build on progress first made in 2015, when stakeholders came together to address how to handle data generated from wearables. Recommendations include:

  • Being open and transparent about data collection practices;
  • Being careful about how data is used;
  • Making it easy for consumers to access their data and control how it is shared;
  • Including strong security measures; and
  • Being accountable to consumers.
