On December 13, 2023, Aimed Alliance published a new resource Know Your Rights: Alternative Funding Programs. Alternative funding programs (AFPs) are third-party companies that partner with employer-sponsored health plans to identify alternative sources for the plan’s specialty drug benefits. These alternative sources can include patient assistance programs (PAPs), copay assistance programs, and importation from international pharmacies. AFPs can result in consumers experience difficulties and delays in accessing their necessary treatments. To help consumers navigate these programs Aimed Alliance’s new resource reviews how AFPs work; the problems these programs create for consumers; and how consumers can push back if required to enroll in an AFP.
