Aimed Alliance Leads Efforts to Ask CMS to Improve Access to Treatment for High Risk Medicare Beneficiaries

On April 23, 2020, Aimed Alliance submitted sign-on letters to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to request that the agency waive prior authorization and step therapy requirements for Medicare beneficiaries who are at high risk for severe illness due to COVID-19 during the public health emergency. Joined by 27 medical organizations and patient advocacy groups, we specifically asked the agency to issue a 1135 blanket waiver to permit health care providers to administer or prescribe medications to treat high-risk beneficiaries, and would allow for the coverage and payment of such medications, without having to comply with the plans’ prior authorization and step therapy requirements.
