Youngkin Vetoes PDAB Bill in Virginia for Second Year

0

For the second consecutive year, Governor Glenn Youngkin has vetoed legislation aimed at establishing a Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB). Governor Youngkin reasoned that the bill was vetoed as it could restrict patient access to critical medications by prioritizing cost control over medical necessity, particularly for individuals with rare or life-threatening conditions. The veto memo also emphasized that many life-saving treatments rely on high-cost drugs targeted by these affordability measures and explained that lowering drug prices should focus on increasing transparency and fostering competition, rather than implementing price controls.

Lastly, the letter pointed to the experiences of other states, such as Maryland and Colorado, whose PDABs have failed to deliver the promised savings. View Governor Youngkin’s letter here.
