Urgent Calls for Federal Oversight of Hemp-Derived Cannabinoids Amid Rising Child Hospitalizations

0

In a recent article, the Wall Street Journal highlights how hundreds of children are being rushed to hospitals after unintentionally consuming THC products. The lack of federal regulations governing the production and accessibility of hemp-derived cannabinoids has allowed manufacturers to deceptively market intoxicating products as harmless. While some states have attempted to regulate these products, enforcement has proven challenging, resulting in significant gaps in consumer protection laws and enforcement. The FDA has issued warnings about the dangers posed to children by these intoxicating hemp-derived consumer goods but lacks the authority to regulate hemp-derived cannabinoids without new legislation from Congress. This is another example that demonstrates why there is an urgent need for federal action to create standardized guidelines, clear labeling practices, and quality control measures to ensure consumer safety.
