Uncovering Disparities in Medication Access: Copay Accumulator and Maximizer Policies

0

A recent survey published in the Journal of Managed Care + Specialty Pharmacy has shed light on disparities in accessing essential medications. While the study revealed similar utilization rates of copay cards between non-white and white patients, it found a significant divergence in their exposure to copay accumulator and maximizer programs. More specifically, the research indicated that non-White patients were significantly more likely to be exposed to copay maximizer policies, with an odds ratio of 1.27, and significantly more prone to be encounter copay accumulator policies, with an odds ratio of 1.31, as compared to their white counterparts. This heightened exposure to copay accumulators and maximizers likely amplifies the risk of unexpected increased out-of-pocket costs, potentially exacerbating existing gaps in access to essential medications and health disparities for racial and ethnic minorities.
