TX Judge Orders Insurer To Pay for Patient’s Life-Saving Cancer Treatment

A Texas judge ordered Aetna to cover the cancer treatment for a man with advanced prostate cancer after he was previously denied coverage. The insurer refused to cover the treatment, despite a doctor’s recommendation, claiming it was experimental and not eligible for coverage. Since the patient also suffered from another chronic illness, his treatment options were extremely limited. The cancer treatment, Proton Radiation Therapy, has been used at the patient’s treatment facility for nearly ten years, and is accepted by many insurers, including Medicaid and Medicare. Aimed Alliance applauds the court’s decision to mandate treatment coverage and believes evidence-based treatment decisions made between a physician and patient should not be overruled by third-party payers.
