Primary Care Providers Reluctant to Talk About CBD

Most primary care providers (PCPs) are hesitant to recommend cannabidiol (CBD) products to patients given doubts regarding the products’ safety and effectiveness.

In a survey of 235 PCPs, doctors stated that CBD was often brought up by patients during medical appointments, but most PCPs do not feel as though they are knowledgeable about the products and are wary of CBD marketing claims. A smaller study including 14 PCPs showed that factors such as discomfort, lack of time, CBD as a low priority, and low-quality evidence contributed to the lack of dialogue surrounding CBD products.

While PCPs are more receptive to patient use of CBD in states where marijuana is legal, many doctors believe the product is ineffective for most marketed conditions aside from chronic non-cancer pain and anxiety. Since CBD products are poorly regulated, their effectiveness is unclear, and some researchers are concerned about their long-term effects on children and adolescents.  Read the full Pain News Network article here
