Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in children is defined as growth failure associated with inadequate growth hormone (GH) production. GH is produced by the brain’s pituitary gland and is essential for muscle and bone growth, strength, and distribution of body fat. Individuals with GHD need GH treatments to replace their bodies lack of GH production. However, health plans can implement a wide variety of barriers that limit access to these treatments, such as prior authorization.
Aimed Alliance new resource Know Your Rights: Growth Hormone Deficiency, provides an overview of growth hormone disorder diagnosis and treatments. In addition, the resource provides examples of health insurers’ benefit utilization practices that can delay consumers ability to access their medications, and provides information for patients on how to appeal an adverse benefit determination from their health plan.
