The American College of Physicians and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released joint guidelines calling for better stewardship of antibiotics among primary care doctors in order to reduce the spread of antibiotic-resistant superbugs. A recent study found that at least one in four of the 100 million antibiotic prescriptions written annually is for a virus for which the medication is ineffective.
