A new study from Duke Medicine shows that a simple, rapid blood test can distinguish between viral and bacterial infections, allowing more accurate antibiotic prescribing. Previously identified gene signatures linked to viral infections can be used to correctly distinguish non-infectious and viral infections from bacterial infections, all by measuring patients’ gene expression profiles from small blood samples. Misuse of antibiotics is a key contributor to antibiotic resistance, and a blood test like as this one can reduce such misuse. Learn more about Duke University’s research here.
