Massachusetts State Representative Jennifer Benson has introduced a bill that would require insurance companies in the state to respond to a step therapy appeal within 72 hours. Step therapy occurs after a doctor prescribes medication an insurance company may consider too new or expensive, forcing the patient to try other drugs that may not work before the company will pay for their original prescription. There is generally an appeals process, but it can be time consuming and cause delays to access to medications. Read more here.
