Insurer Seeks Massive Premium Increases in NC

Despite already high premiums, the largest health insurance company in the state of North Carolina is calling for a 34.6 percent premium increase for plans offered on the state’s federal health exchange in 2016. The increase was revised after the company initially requested a rate increase of almost 26 percent in June. The increase comes after the company raised premiums by 13.5 percent in 2015. The company’s executives blamed the need for a premium increase on the failure of healthier people to sign up for health insurance as required under the Affordable Care Act. As a result, many consumers who are ineligible for federal subsidies will likely face difficulties in paying the increased rates. The state’s other insurers are also requesting double digit increases for the upcoming year. However, these proposed rate hikes are not final. The state’s Department of Insurance will evaluate the request and determine if the increase is justified. Aimed Alliance believes quality health care should not only be available but affordable for all consumers, including those who have chronic illnesses. To read the full story, click here.
