Earlier this month, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a consumer warning about a product marketed as a treatment for cancer, autism, and other medical conditions. Miracle Mineral Solution and similar products have been described online as 28 percent sodium chlorite in distilled water, with distributors suggesting consumers mix the solution with citric acid before ingesting.
However, the FDA, which has not approved the products for the treatment of any health condition, says that when the acid is mixed with the solution, it becomes chlorine dioxide, becoming akin to drinking bleach. The FDA, which has been warning consumers about these products since 2010, has received several reports of people experiencing serious and even life-threatening side effects after drinking the solution.
