Even though in most instances, plan enrollees cannot change their health plan once the plan year has begun, insurers can change its formulary benefits at any point. They may increase the out-of-pocket costs for a particular treatment or drop coverage of the treatment altogether, thereby forcing the plan enrollee to switch medications—a concept referred to as nonmedical switching.
