CMS to Launch Pilot AI Model to Reduce Wasteful Medicare Spending

0

Beginning in January 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will launch the Wasteful and Inappropriate Service Reduction (WISeR) Model to oversee Medicare payments. The initiative will combine advanced technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), to support payment review processes and identify care that may be clinically unsupported. By partnering with companies experienced in using these tools, CMS aims to streamline reviews and reduce unnecessary spending, however, some stakeholders have raised concerns about potential impacts on access to certain treatments. The six-year pilot, running through December 31, 2031, will initially focus on services including skin and tissue substitutes, electrical nerve stimulator implants, and knee arthroscopy.
