On July 10, 2024, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed to make physician reimbursement for audio-only telehealth services permanent. This decision, part of the proposed 2025 Physician Fee Schedule, marks a significant development for rural patients who often have less access to broadband internet compared to urban patients, and some of which may only be able to use audio-only telehealth services. Under the proposed rule, CMS plans to make audio-only telehealth services permanently available for cases where patients are either incapable of or do not consent to using video technology. This change, set to take effect January 1, 2025, aims to establish a more equitable healthcare system that enhances accessibility, quality, and affordability for Medicare beneficiaries. Read the rule.
