California Attorney General Rob Bonta has issued a warning to consumers about sham health insurance plans offered by some health care sharing ministries (HSMs). HSMs, exempted from some of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act mandates, allow people to pool their money with others who have similar religious beliefs, but do not guarantee payment for covered services and fail to cover benefits like birth control, prescriptions, preexisting conditions, and mental health care. California has previously issued cease and desist orders to certain HSMs for misleading consumers, as the plans often use language that closely mimics traditional health insurance. Read more here.
