Aimed Alliance Submits Letter of Support for Kentucky Step-Therapy Reform

0

On March 1, 2022, Aimed Alliance sent a letter to members of the Kentucky House Standing Committee on Banking and Insurance urging them to pass SB 140, which would enhance Kentucky’s current step-therapy law. Step-therapy, also known as fail-first, requires patients to try and fail on medications before their health plan will cover the medication their doctor originally prescribed. Without proper guardrails, step-therapy can result in disease progression and cause irreparable harm. SB 140 would ensure that any step-therapy protocols in Kentucky are based on medical and clinical guidelines; it would prohibit patients from trying and failing on medications they have already failed on; and ensure that a patient can be exempt from the step-therapy policy when, based on medical necessity, it is not in the best interest of the patient. On March 2, 2022, the House Banking and Insurance Committee unanimously approved SB 140, and the bill will now move to the Kentucky House of Representatives for a vote by the entire House legislature.
