A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) finds that roughly 15 percent of health insurance plans lack access to in-network specialists. The study involved reviewing networks from 34 states that offered plans through the federal marketplace during open enrollment in 2015. The lack of access means that patients with such plans have to pay high out-of-pocket costs to see a specialist. The goal of the study was to highlight barriers to access in order to enhance enforcement of current regulations or encourage promulgation of new regulations to ultimately make care more affordable.
