New Education Requirement for Prescribers of Controlled Substances

0

The Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act was incorporated into the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. This bill requires any practitioner, as a condition of receiving or renewing a registration to prescribe controlled substances, to complete a one-time, eight-hour training on the treatment of substance use disorders or the pharmacological management of pain. This requirement does not apply to physicians who are board certified in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry. For many physicians, a lack of training and knowledge about the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) has prevented them from prescribing buprenorphine to treat OUD. By providing practitioners with education on evidence-based prevention and treatment, this bill is intended to better equip practitioners to treat people with substance use disorders and those at risk of developing OUD or other substance use disorders.

Aimed Alliance applauds the efforts of the Biden-Harris Administration to expand access to evidence-based prevention and treatment, harm reduction, and recovery support services.
