On January 5, 2022, Aimed Alliance Counsel, Ashira Vantrees, authored an op-ed which called on the New York legislature to protect patients from health insurance policies that limit consumer’s access to life-saving treatments. While applauding the New York legislature for passing copay accumulator reform in 2022, the piece recognizes the need for the legislature to do more to protect patients from overly burdensome step-therapy protocols. Step-therapy, also known as “fail first” requires consumers to try-and-fail on alternative treatments before the health plan will cover their originally prescribed treatment. Without proper guardrails these policies can result in irreversible disease progression, increased health care costs, or even death. Read the op-ed here.
