In his recent commentary, Robert Goldberg argues the “value-based” pricing approach being taken by a small group of doctors would hurt patients and ultimately stifle the discovery of a cancer cure. The value-based approach prices drugs based on how long they extend the average patient’s life, directly allowing insurers to impose their priorities on patients. Mr. Goldberg goes on to argue that measuring drugs’ value by average survival ignores the longevity and detail necessary for drug innovation leading to cures. Read more here.
