Some Regulatory Relief Adopted During the COVID-19 Pandemic May Remain in Place After Pandemic Ends

On April 15, 2020, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Seema Verma noted that some of the regulations that CMS waived to address the COVID-19 public health emergency may remain in place even after the emergency ends. In particular, she voiced support for the regulatory changes that eased telehealth restrictions in Medicare, expanded provider workforces, and increased access to a number of services. CMS is currently looking at which regulations should be maintained after the pandemic through the lens of the Patients Over Paperwork effort, which is intended to ease unnecessary administrative burdens on health care providers.
