Under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), Medicaid is still required to cover approved COVID-19 vaccines and all other CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization (ACIP) recommended vaccines with no-cost sharing to consumers. However, this requirement does not extend to COVID-19 vaccines that were approved under an emergency use authorization (EUA). In addition, CMS has clarified that non-ACIP recommended vaccines can also be covered with no-cost sharing if deemed medically necessary. For example, if a health care provider recommends an RSV vaccine for an adult over the age of 60, this could be considered medically necessary and therefore would likely be covered.
