Insurance Industry Has Responsibility To Improve Patient Access

UnitedHealth Group, America’s largest health insurer, boasted of its $36 billion in revenues in first quarter 2015 revenues, a 13% increase from last year, due to “more effective and more modern approaches.” Yet, these “modern” approaches include burdensome methods that create significant barriers to meaningful health care, such as step therapy and specialty tiering. As a result, tens of thousands of cancer patients deal with heavily restricted coverage, rising copays, and limited access to the drugs they need. While it is understandable that the insurance industry would work to expand its profits, the industry also has a responsibility to improve patient access. The Hill’s blog has the full story.
