The Florida Senate recently voted to restrict the sale of intoxicating cannabinoid products. SB 1698 addresses health and safety concerns associated with these consumer products by limiting the levels of intoxicating THC in hemp-extract products. Specifically, it targets delta-8, delta-9, and delta-10 THC, among other cannabinoids, identifying them as controlled substances. In addition, the bill strengthens packaging and manufacturing requirements for these products. The bill builds on a state law that passed last year prohibiting the sale and marketing of cannabinoid-containing products to individuals under 21.
Echoing these concerns on a national level, in November 2023, the National Foundation for Women Legislators passed a resolution advocating for tighter federal regulation of consumer products containing hemp-derived cannabinoids. The resolution calls on Congress to provide the Food and Drug Administration with the authority and resources to regulate products like CBD-infused food and drinks. It emphasizes the imperative for legal reforms to mitigate product risks and improve consumer safety, aligning with the objectives of SB 1698 in Florida.
