There are intense disparities in treatment for the estimated 1.2 million Americans living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). For example, African-American men are seven times more likely to die from HIV-related complications than white men, and Latino men are almost twice as likely than white men. Patient advocates have called for an increased focus on socioeconomic barriers preventing HIV positive individuals from accessing medications and adhering to treatment plans in order to remain healthy.
