Border-state lawmakers have introduced legislation in Congress that would allow Americans to import prescription drugs from Canada in hopes of driving down drug prices. Aimed Alliance believes the Safe and Affordable Drugs from Canada Act of 2015 (S.122) raises serious concerns about the safety of medications being imported, which are not reviewed for safety or approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and can have potentially significant health consequences.
While S. 122 permits importation of medications from an “approved Canadian pharmacy,” half the shipments seized by U.S. government officials from websites claiming to be Canadian pharmacies in fact came from Israel, India, Costa Rica, and Vanuatu. Moreover, the U.S. government notified the domain registrant of CanadaDrugs.com that it was selling unapproved and misbranded drugs to Americans, one of more than 3,400 rogue pharmacies currently operating.
This bill and a similar state law in Maine threaten the health and safety of patients who are seriously ill and have pain, and threaten to undermine the advancements and pharmaceutical industry has made at curing diseases and treating other medical conditions.
