On March 6, 2020, the National Psoriasis Foundation delivered a sign-on letter to the House and Senate sponsors of the Safe Step Act. Aimed Alliance, along with 49 other patient advocacy organizations and provider associations, joined the letter to voice the community’s support for this important legislation. The Safe Step Act, H.R. 2279/S. 2546, would improve patient access to care by requiring commercial health insurance plans to provide an expeditious, transparent, and reasonable appeals process for step therapy protocols. Additionally, the Safe Step Act would require health plans to respond to appeals within 24-72 hours and base their benefit determination on sound medical reasoning and necessity to the patient. Finally, the Safe Step Act would require health plans to make their appeals processes available to both patients and providers online. The sign-on letter commended the sponsors for their leadership on this issue and requested that they pursue expeditious passage of the legislation.
