Dr. David Hardy, the Chair of the HIV Medicine Association, has published an op-ed in Stat News analyzing the impact that a recent proposed rule could have on HIV prevention and treatment. CMS has proposed to weaken Medicare’s Six Protected Class protections, which will allow Medicare Part D plan sponsors to restrict access to Protected Class medications. Dr. Hardy points out that antiretroviral medications are among the Protected Classes, and this policy proposal stands in opposition to the established strategy of treating and stabilizing as many people with HIV as possible to halt the spread of the virus. Restricting access to antiretroviral medications will reduce the number of people who can access them, which could lead to increased viral transmission rates, undoing decades of progress in preventing the spread of HIV.
